Lunchtime Learning: Employment Law Webinar Series 2024

Marianne McJannett, Head of Employment, is continuing our lunchtime learning webinar series with some upcoming dates for your diary. They will be of interest to any business owners, employers, people managers, anyone working in HR and professional advisers. Please come along to some or all of them, and submit any questions you might have in advance.

Friday 16 February 12:30 – 1:30 Understanding Matrescence: what it is and how employers can support their employees returning from maternity leave

In this session, Marianne will be joined by Susannah Dale, founder of the Maternity Pledge. The Maternity Pledge offers a holistic approach to maternity leave by focusing on the retention and well-being of employees, providing a cost-effective alternative to unsatisfactory returns to the workplace and recruitment challenges. It does this via a workplace pledge, handbook and action plan that put communication and support at the heart of the maternity leave and return to work program, and champions women through the transformative journey of motherhood and the mental health struggles of becoming a parent through employee matrescence packs. Marianne and Susannah will discuss Matrescence and the transition to motherhood to help employers understand the journey their employee has been on while they’ve been off on maternity leave and how that may have changed them as a person.

Tuesday 19 March – 12:30-1:30 Recruitment: what works well and avoiding legal pitfalls

In this webinar, Marianne will be looking at the legal points to consider when embarking on recruitment, including discrimination issues, as well as contractual restrictions placed on the employee being recruited. Marianne will be joined by Neil Ferguson, Managing Director of Gravitate HR who will discuss this topic from an HR perspective, giving insight into what he and his colleagues see working well for clients vs. where they maybe let themselves down and maybe lose out. Neil has been with Gravitate HR for over 12 years and during this time, he has worked with clients across a wide range of industry and sectors, providing external HR support on a retained and project basis. Gravitate HR are regularly engaged to support ongoing recruitment within existing clients and one-off commissions for specific roles. Neil has supported recruitment at all levels within organisations from planning though to appointment.

Thursday 25 April – 12:30 – Protected conversations and settlement agreements

Where an employer and employee relationship breaks down, due to conduct issues, performance or personality clashes, a possible way to resolve these issues can be through a protected conversation and resulting settlement agreement. In this webinar Marianne will discuss the occasions where a protected conversation might take place, how this conversation is formed and what is involved in preparing a settlement agreement.

Thursday 23 May – 12:30 – Defending an employment tribunal claim

Occasionally, an employer receives an employment tribunal claim from a former employee. This can be a daunting prospect, particularly if the employer has never gone through the tribunal process before. Marianne will provide a short introduction on the tribunal process, and how an employer can defend a claim at the tribunal.
